Who doesn't love to jump in the pool on a hot summer day? Swimming is a refreshing activity that you can do all day. YourWay Storage compiled a list of several nearby options for cooling off this summer in Pocatello.
Ross Park Aquatic Complex
A children’s play area with lily pads, a lazy river, and a zero-depth play area for smaller children. There is also a water slide for older kids and adults. The pool opens each day at noon and season passes are available. Ross Park Aquatic Complex is located at 2901 South 2nd Ave.
Bannock Reservoir at the Wellness Complex
At the crossroads of Chubbuck Road and Olympus Drive, you will find a beautiful lake for summer swims. This man-made lake is free to use all summer long. There are no lifeguards on duty but there are a lot of shallow areas for the kids to play safely.
Stuart Park Splash Pad
A great option for little splashers. Here you will not have to worry about deep water, this free splash pad is perfect for the littlest swimmers. Located at 5177 Stuart Ave.
Gone Fishing
Edson Fichter Nature Area
Inside the city limits with gorgeous views of the mountains. Just a short trail from the parking lot to the Portneuf River to fish in the community fishing pond.
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game provides free fishing supplies even for those without gear and licenses. Just look for the Take Me Fishing Trailer as it makes many stops around the state of Idaho. In the summer months, it is usually in Southeast Idaho and you can check the website for the times and locations of the trailer.
Going Up?
Rock climbing is a great pass time in Pocatello and nearby communities. If you are new to the area and interested in rock climbing but not sure how to get started the Parks and Recreation Department offers classes for adults and children.
Idaho State University
Climbing equipment is available on Thursday evenings and if you have your own equipment you can climb any time. 1002 Sam Nixon Ave., Building 88, Pocatello, ID 83209
The Lava Cliffs
Head to 775 Yellowstone Ave # 319, Pocatello, ID 83201 check out the lava cliffs, which are the perfect height for bouldering or a quick climb.
Shady Side
Shady Side Trail offers plenty of shade from gigantic trees along the trails. This gorgeous woodsy trail can be found off of 4th Ave.
Walking, Hiking, or Bike Riding
Trails around Pocatello are perfect for a range of skill levels. Ranging in difficulty with some taking you up a mountain and others winding through neighborhoods, finding a trail you love is simple.
Portneuf Greenway Trails
Paved trails to walk or bike through are a nice addition to the city. Several of the trails are shaded while others may be better in the morning or evening.
City Creek Trails
A network of trails on the west side of the city in an area surrounding City Creek Canyon. There are over 50 miles of trails, and this is a popular area for biking and hiking. The main trail is near the water and if you venture off to the side trails you are rewarded with the feeling of almost being alone. It is difficult to believe you are in the city when you are on these trails.
Stairway to Heaven
A stone staircase and a way to get an amazing view of Old Town Pocatello. The staircase is located close to 400 South Lincoln Ave and is within a subdivision.
Cherry Springs Nature Trail
Not very steep or long so this is a great place to bring younger children to introduce them to hiking. Plants are labeled along the way to learn a bit about nature as you hike. This trail is located south of the valley on Mink Creek Road.
Cool Off Indoors
Idaho State University
During the summer months, Idaho State University offers a play in June with admission ranging from $10-$20
Old Town Actors Studio
Located at 427 North Main Street, offers a summer play in June as well.
Palace Playhouse
A dinner theater located at 158 East Chubbuck Road and depending on the night you are able to get dinner and a show!
